INDIANAPOLIS, June 16, 2024 — Micah Beckwith has been nominated as the GOP Lieutenant Governor candidate for Indiana at the 2024 GOP Convention, securing 891 votes from State Delegates. However, his candidacy has quickly become embroiled in controversy following a video he posted on Facebook back in 2021.

In the video, Beckwith claims that God told him, "I sent those people to riot on January 6th." This statement has sparked a wave of condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum. January 6, 2021, remains a dark day in American history when a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol, leading to deaths, injuries, and widespread damage.

The response to Beckwith's video has been swift and severe. Many leaders within the GOP and beyond have criticized his comments and have begun withdrawing their support for his candidacy. The January 6th attack is widely regarded as a tragic and unacceptable assault on the nation's democratic processes, and any justification or support for the events of that day is seen as deeply troubling.

Among those distancing themselves from Beckwith is Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, who released a statement in 2021 saying, "The events of January 6th were an attack on our democracy, and any attempt to justify or support them is completely unacceptable." Other prominent Republicans in Indiana have echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and condemning violence.

Despite the controversy, Beckwith's nomination is a significant political milestone. He secured the nomination with a decisive vote from the delegates, reflecting his strong support base within the Indiana GOP. However, the fallout from his comments could pose significant challenges to his campaign and the broader GOP ticket as they head into the general election.

Micah Beckwith will be Mike Braun's runningmate for lieutenant governor. Mike Braun won the GOP nominee for Indiana governor on May 7 GOP Primary of 2024. Attempts to reach both the Braun and Beckwith campaigns for comments have been unsuccessful. Requests for statements were made this Sunday evening, coinciding with Father's Day, which explains the delayed response.

The controversy surrounding Beckwith's comments and his nomination could have far-reaching implications for the Indiana GOP and the upcoming election. As the party navigates this turbulent situation, the focus will likely be on addressing the concerns raised by his statements and reinforcing a commitment to democratic values and the rule of law.

Micah Beckwith's nomination as the GOP Lieutenant Governor candidate for Indiana has already stirred significant controversy due to his remarks about the January 6th riot. As leaders continue to distance themselves from his candidacy, the impact on the upcoming election remains uncertain. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions within the GOP as it grapples with its direction and values in the post-Trump era.
