Indiana’s Contributions to Forensic Science

Indiana has been at the forefront of forensic investigations through the dedicated work of its State Police Laboratory Division. The Indiana State Police operate four laboratories across the state, located in Lowell, Fort Wayne, Evansville, and Indianapolis. Each facility provides comprehensive forensic services, assisting law enforcement agencies in solving complex cases.

Below are some notable statistics from 2023 that demonstrate the impact of the Indiana State Police laboratories:

- 24,399 new cases were submitted for forensic analysis at Indiana’s four state police laboratories.

- Crime Scene Investigators responded to 1,020 different crime scenes statewide.

- Polygraph Examiners conducted 761 polygraph tests in investigations.

- The Digital Forensic Unit completed 633 cases, examining digital evidence critical to investigations.

- A total of 698 cases were linked to a potential suspect by a CODIS DNA match, helping to provide leads in unsolved cases.

These numbers represent just a fraction of the dedication shown by forensic scientists and law enforcement officials throughout Indiana.
