Fact Check: Incumbent Congressman Andre Carson Caught in Lie About Debate Claims

In a recent video interview, Congressman Andre Carson, who is running for re-election in Indiana’s 7th District, falsely claimed that his Republican opponent, John Schmitz, refused to participate in a debate. However, a deeper look into the situation reveals that the truth is quite the opposite.

John Schmitz, a businessman and newcomer to politics, has publicly confirmed his willingness to debate Carson. In fact, Schmitz has gone on record numerous times, including with the Hoosier Enquirer, expressing his eagerness to face Carson on the debate stage. Despite Schmitz’s clear commitment, Carson is trying to shift the narrative, claiming his opponent declined to debate.

The Hoosier Enquirer reached out to Carson’s office back in August, where a spokesperson explicitly stated that “Andre wasn’t doing any debates.” This aligns with Carson’s longstanding pattern of avoiding public debates. He hasn’t participated in a single debate since 2008, the year he was first elected to Congress. Sixteen years of dodging debates, yet Carson now attempts to deflect by falsely accusing his opponent of unwillingness to engage.

Hoosier Enquirer has previously published an article highlighting Carson’s avoidance of debates, showcasing how his reluctance to debate has become a pattern in every election cycle. Carson’s refusal to engage in open discussion with his opponents is concerning, as debates are crucial for holding elected officials accountable and giving voters an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates.

John Schmitz, on the other hand, is making headlines for his willingness to confront Carson in a public debate. Schmitz, who has been running a grassroots campaign focused on addressing local concerns like infrastructure and crime, has repeatedly called for a debate to give the people of Indiana’s 7th District a clear comparison between the candidates’ platforms.

Carson’s attempt to deceive voters by shifting the blame onto his opponent not only undermines the democratic process but also raises questions about his transparency. In an era where voters demand accountability and honest leadership, Carson’s avoidance tactics do him no favors.

As Election Day approaches, the people of Indianapolis deserve a representative willing to stand up and debate the issues that matter to their community. The contrast between Carson’s avoidance and Schmitz’s openness is stark, and voters will undoubtedly take note.

In a district where Andre Carson has comfortably held his seat for over a decade, his refusal to debate leaves many wondering whether he’s out of touch with the concerns of his constituents. Meanwhile, Schmitz’s willingness to debate signals a desire for transparency, accountability, and engagement—qualities the voters of the 7th District may find increasingly appealing.
